Mermaids: Are they Real?

The ancient myths have described many characters that are still a mystery for today’s world but are they real or were they just the imagination of the ancient people. You must have heard a name called unicorn which is a horse with a horn on his head, and Centaurs which were half-man half-horse. These creatures are just myth characters but science is still exploring about their existence but there is also a character which is very famous for its beauty and is described in many different movies, Mermaids.

What are they?

Mermaids are described in various Greek mythologies and according to the theories, they have appeared thousands of years ago in Assyria. They are a very beautiful creature with the upper-half body of women and lower-half body as a fish. They are very good singers and are known to be the wives of powerful sea monsters, many native Australians also call them yawkyawks because of their melodious singing. Their drawings were also drawn in ancient Stone Age paintings which are around 30,000 years old along with the male characters also who are half-man and half-fish known as Merman.  Historians, philosophers, and anthropologists are searching for the proofs for their existence but till date, there is no full proof evidence found. Sometimes, they were also referred as the bad luck or omens because they sunk the ships inside the water like their cousin sirens do. Sirens were the evil version of a mermaid, they sing to attract the sailors towards them and make them sink in the dangerous rock areas. In many religions and cultures, mermaids are seen as a good sign, not as a danger to the human lifestyle and they also fall in love with humans easily.

Biggest Proof ever Found

In 2013, biologist Dr. Paul Robertson came up with one of the biggest success in the field of evidence on the existence of mermaid. Once, he was shooting a sequel to his recent documentary on Mermaid and other mythological sea creatures in his submarine at the bottom of Greenland Sea, during the shooting sessions, suddenly a hand came and hit the submarine’s window and ran away. The hand seemed like a human’s hand but had webbed fingers and also looked like a fish wing. They watched the video again and found that the creature was of the human size and moved very fast in water like a fish. Since the release of this documentary, the viewers increased significantly in the search of mermaids and the interview of Dr. Paul Robertson became very popular. They gained a lot of followers because of this discovery and Animal Planet channel also got a good raise in their TRP ratings.

Kiryat Yam is also a popular mermaid sighting spot in Israel. Once there was a huge uproar when people gathered at the coast of Kiryat Yam and spotted lots of mermaids, but after some time they just vanished from the coast. Due to this commotion, the king of that town announced that he will reward the person who finds any proof on the mermaids.

But these are all theories, mermaids are just mythological creatures and there is no significant evidence of their existence. We can see mermaids in many high rated movies and books, the video evidence gives us some curiosity to know about them and explores them in the depths of the sea. In 2012, before the video of Dr. Paul Robertson came in the news, the U.S. National Ocean Service had already stated that there is no such evidence of mermaids which were found, but still this beautiful creature still exists in many stories.
